Pie. Just the word triggers memories of mouth-watering fillings, flaky crusts, and family. For a pie lover, it’s the best part of the holidays and for many, it’s a quintessential part of the Thanksgiving feast. Pie has always been an integral part of both Thanksgiving and Christmas for my family. I remember when I was a kid, my mom would always make coconut cream pie (my dad’s favorite) and he and my aunt would hide it from each other all day, hoping to get the pie to themselves. And my mom always had to make 2 pumpkin pies because that was a big favorite with most of the family. I’m a huge fan of fruit pies, mostly because of the way the fruit filling seeps into the bottom crust. It’s such a delicious combination!  img_1518So you’ve got the menu planned, right down to the pies. Now you just need to decide what kind of wine to serve. If you’re wondering what wines pair well with pie, I’ve got you covered! I went through the grueling process of tasting some of the most popular Thanksgiving pie flavors with a variety of wines so your pairing will be absolutely delicious!

I tried 9 different wines with 5 pies. Of all the wines, Riesling was hands-down the most versatile. The flavor is light and slightly sweet, which marries well with the flavors in the pies I tried. Surprisingly, I was most disappointed with Chardonnay. I’ve had great success pairing Chardonnay with cinnamon-laced desserts, but just wasn’t a fan of it with any of the pies, several of which had a good bit of cinnamon. If you’re a fan of port, that’s also a versatile dessert option. I’m personally not a fan, but conventional wisdom says port pairs well with desserts, and the boyfriend didn’t mind it with any of the pies. Here are my picks for the best wine and pie combinations:

Not a fan of pie? That’s okay, more for me! Just stick with these flavor combinations for whatever dessert you serve and you won’t go wrong. Try a lemon bar with a white Bordeaux or Sauvignon Blanc, or a pumpkin and cream cheese whoopee pie with a Riesling. Maybe have a coconut cream cake with a pinot noir or chenin blanc. The options are both endless and scrumptious!
