What a week, am I right? A lot of Houston area schools went on Spring Break this week and some of them won’t be returning to school for 2 weeks instead of 1 due to the spread of the coronavirus. Colleges are extending their spring breaks as well or moving to online classes. The NBA suspended its season. Stores are sold out of toilet paper and hand sanitizer. The Houston Rodeo was closed 11 days early for the first time in its history. For those of you not from the area, let’s just say this was a huge blow to many, financially and emotionally. And to top all of this off, daylight savings time started on Sunday. It’s been a rough week.
If you’re worried about the possibility of being quarantined, have the kids at home with nothing to do, or are avoiding people to be on the safe side, you probably need wine. A LOT of wine. Plus, you may have been drinking a lot of big, bold reds for the last few months and are ready to shift to lighter bodied reds or some bright, refreshing whites. Either way, this is a good time to refresh your wine rack. Here are my top picks for spring.
If you prefer to stick with reds but want something a little lighter than the Syrahs and Malbecs that were keeping you warm all winter, Pinot Noir is always a good option. It’s very versatile with food pairings but is easy drinking enough to sip on by itself. The Kali Hart Pinot Noir from Talbott Vineyards is a really enjoyable wine. Red blends are also good options when made with medium bodied grapes. Blends are made to be easy to drink, with varietals selected to balance each other, enhancing the best of each while smoothing out any harshness. Li Per Te Rosso Veneto from Traveling Vineyard is made from primarily Corvina, an Italian red grape that makes a dry, medium-bodied wine. It has great structure and toasted raisin and plummy fruit flavor. Cucharon is another red blend from Traveling Vineyard, this time made from nearly equal parts Malbec and Petite Verdot, with a little Tannat thrown in. It’s a little tart, a little fruity, and very good. It’s surprisingly complex and perfect for the adventurous.
More of a white wine drinker? No worries, we’ve got you covered there, too. Viognier is a full-bodied white, which is perfect for spring- when it’s warming up but you’re not quite ready for a super refreshing wine. Pebble has good weight with healthy acidity and stone fruit flavors. It also pairs well with spring and summer foods- grilled kabobs, crawfish boils, cobb salad, roast chicken…you get the idea. Riesling is also a good option, whether you prefer dry or sweet wines. The high acidity helps keep it from getting too sweet, even when it’s off-dry, and the 2018 Chateau Ste. Michelle Dry Riesling recently won top white wine at the Rodeo Uncorked wine competition.
