Up Close & Personal with Rewined Candles

The Sugar Vine was founded by a love of wine and a desire to be a part of other wine lovers’ journeys. That’s the guiding light in our search for new products for your home. We are excited to announce the launch of an exciting new series, where we share up close and personal interviews with the artists we work with.

Today, we’re speaking with Frances of Rewined Candles.

Q: How did Rewined get started?

A: “Our founder, Adam, was working at a restaurant in Charleston that was known for having the largest mimosa brunch. He saw hundreds of bottles being discarded and wanted to find a way to use them. With a background in the food and beverage industry and a passion for wine, he decided to cut the bottles and turn them into candles based on his favorite wine varietals.”

Q: How long have you been in business?

A: “Rewined was founded in 2009.”

Q: How many people work at Rewined?

A: “50 – 7 of that is office staff and the rest in manufacturing. It takes a lot of hands to make our candles!”

Q: Where do you get the wine bottles?

A: “The type of bottle that we use is actually a cheap Champagne bottle. That type of glass bottle is ideal for candle making because 1) the glass is annealed to accept a bubbly liquid and 2) there is no punt on the bottom of the bottle. Our bottles come to us from the distributor that makes the bottles for the wine industry. The frosted bottles that we are now using in the ‘With a Twist’ collection came to us from a local company, Fisher Recycling.”

Q: What is the process for introducing new scents?

A: “Our fragrances are based on the tasting notes in each varietal. We always tell people that you’re smelling what you would taste. New fragrance development starts with those tasting notes. Sometimes new fragrances come together very quickly and sometimes the process can take months. One pattern that we have noticed over the years is that the less familiar varietals do not sell as well. We’ve tried to do a Carmenere, a Chenin Blanc, just to name a few and they were not well received. A lot of why people buy the candles is “Oh, it’s Courtney’s birthday and Courtney loves Chardonnay so she would love a Chardonnay candle”. So they are shopping for the varietal just as much as they are the fragrance.”

Q: What’s next for the business?

A: “We’ve expanded from “just” the wine bottle candles into our barrel aged collection, cocktail collection and our new ‘With a Twist’ collection. In the second half of 2022 we’d like to continue that pattern of adding newness! The world of wine and spirits is so broad and it’s fun to learn about them and then turn certain concepts into new collections.”

Q: What do you think is the most exciting part of the business?

A: “We have a lot of fun together as a team so it’s always exciting to come to work.”

Q: What is your favorite scent?

A: “In the fall/winter, Wine Under the Tree. In the spring and summer, Vinho Verde.”

Q: What do you like best about being in business?

A: “Oh gosh, everything! I love talking to people and I get to do that with shop owners all over the country. :)”

Q: What is something you want customers to know about you or your business?

A: “That Rewined is such a great place to work. I’ve been here for 9 years and I have many co-workers with a similar history.”
