If you’ve followed me for long, you probably know that apple desserts and wine are some of my favorite pairings. The spices that are often used in apple desserts, like cinnamon and nutmeg, balance the sweetness of the dessert and often marry well with similar flavors in wine. So today I’d like to share with you some of my very favorite apple desserts and some delicious pairing suggestions.

First, let’s talk wine. Moscato and off-dry or late harvest Rieslings are often a good bet for desserts and these are no exception. Neither is so sweet that they will make you feel sick to your stomach when paired with a dessert, and they both have fruity and floral flavors that pair well with both apples and the spices used in apple desserts.

Unoaked Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc often go well with apple desserts as well, especially ones with lots of cinnamon. Cinnamon is often used with desserts in the U.S. but is considered a spice for savory foods in many parts of the world. Chardonnay and chenin blanc both often have apple and pear notes, as well as occasionally butter (Chardonnay) or honey (Chenin Blanc) flavors. These are all perfect for apple dishes.

Another wine you might not expect to pair with apple desserts but that actually works is Pinot Noir. Wines with a lot of red fruit notes will often go well with dishes high in cinnamon. The fruit flavors will enhance the spice while cutting the bitterness.

You should definitely experiment with apple desserts and wine to see what you like best, but here are a few of my very favorite apple desserts to get you started:

Irish Apple Cake– Moist, flavorful, but not overwhelmingly spicy like some apple cakes. I like to eat this for both dessert and breakfast!

Salted caramel apple bars– Crunchy, chewy, and oh, so delicious! Even better- they’re not hard to make, which makes them perfect to help make a weeknight feel special

Apple Pie– Flaky pie crust and hot, thick apple filling are basically heaven in pastry form

Baked apples– Delicious, spicy, and you can control the amount of sugar, which basically makes this dessert healthy
